Mkambati Tented Camp, MKAMBATI RESERVE, EASTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA

Scope: Interior Design & Concept Architecture

Located in a remote and unspoilt corner of the Eastern Cape, Mkambati Reserve is a botanically biodiverse hotspot, with rolling green hills, waterfalls that flow into crystal pools, and a 10km stretch of coast on the Indian Ocean.

The site was developed with one camp centred on a historic doctor’s house, with activities clustered around an Mkambati Palm, a species that only appears in this reserve.  Palm Cottages with planted green roofs are nestled into the landscape below the doctor’s house, so as to be hidden from above while themselves opening up to the coast beyond.

A second camp is sited along a small river, with tented accommodation carefully placed among and between the existing trees, surrounding by endemic birdlife.  The interiors here, as well as the other camp, draw from the rich culture of the Pondo people, and blend a sense of traditional craft and texture, with a modern sensibility.
